Bass Camp 2015, Monticello, MN

We enjoyed a fantastic day of fly fishing for Smallmouth bass on the Mississippi River Sunday on July 26th at Ellison Park in Monticello north of the Cities
We fished from 10:00 – 3:00 with a break for lunch.  Member Grace Glander graciously provided tips and techniques for catching smallies on the Mississippi.

One on One 2015

What a beautiful day of fishing on the Rush River in Wisconsin with one-on-one instruction on May 16 from a group of talented fly fishers! We had some specialized instruction from 9:30 to 11:30 followed by potluck lunch and then fishing with a mentor on the river until 3:00. We met at the Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club, Ellsworth WI May 16, 2015 and were able to fish there and make use of their picnic tables and facilities. This has been such a popular event we plan to have another One-on-One next spring. So, stay tuned for the date and location for 2016.

Fly Casting Clinic 2014

January 11, 2014

Seventeen women and 6 fly casting instructors from Lew Jewett chapter of IFFF assembled at the Sports Dome in Vadnais Heights.

It was a very nice morning at the dome and lunch with the whole crew afterwards next door at SAK’S sports bar.

How happy to be in a warm dome!
Look what I learned!

Annual Fall Fly Tying Event

Our annual fly tying lessons and practice were held, once again, at Fort Snelling State Park.
We have held this event here for several years since several of our members are DNR and Park employees and the facility is very user-friendly for our group.
We are lucky to have several mentors that have helped through the years.

Paul Johnson, above, is shaping a deer hair popper for bass fishing. Although we did not tie this fly, it was a great demonstration of what is possible when we tie flies.
Bob Trevis was our other mentor.
Both guys tie flies are part of the Laughing Trout group and tie flies with several of our members on Wednesday evenings in Wayzata.
Paul draws and explains and demonstrates some of the inticacies of the flies we would tie. Carol, Chris, Ellen and Paul.

The group watches Paul’s demonstration:
Mary (blue vest), Chris (red vest), Krista (Fort Snelling Naturalist), Ellen, Carol and Lynn.

Mary, hard at work, with Bob’s help.

Sally tying to get a bead on her hook–this is always a tricky task!
Ellen practices starting the thread on the hook.
Bob and Carol getting ready to tie.
Paul helps Chris with a whip finish.

Bass Camp 2013

Bass Camp, 2013, started at the park in Chatfield, MN, so that we could meet our mentors and volunteers for the day and get out on the Root River for a day of some bass fishing (and whatever else we might catch!).

It was a gorgeous morning and appeared that it would be a sunny and not-too-hot day.

There were seven of us and five mentors–an excellent ratio. Vaughn and Grace would be in one boat, Dan and Jodie and Sally in another, and Mike and Joan and Monta in the third. Ellen and Marlene would be wading and casting as would Mike and Trish.

It was a great day to be out and it was fun to do some “catching!”

What a gorgeous day on the river!

Nice bass, Sally!
While the women were getting re-settled after Sally’s catch, Dan caught one also! It takes a man who is confident in himself to allow a photo of a small rock bass!
Jodie with her catch, Dan with the white popper that worked, and Sally’s finger on the lens!
Grace’s nice catch, which she thought was a rock until the bass jumped out of the water.
